First Visit

h-braces5.jpgYour initial appointment will consist of a comprehensive evaluation by the orthodontist and an assessment if and/or when orthodontic treatment is indicated. We evaluate the patient's facial and skeletal growth as well as examine the alignment of the teeth and the function of the jaws as well as their relationship.

If orthodontic treatment is indicated, potential treatment options will be discussed. Some patients may not be ready for orthodontic treatment at this time; thus, they will be placed in our recall system until ready.

There is no discomfort during this appointment, and the average amount of time that this appointment takes is 30 minutes.

Some of the common questions during the first visit are:

  • Is orthodontic treatment indicated?
  • Is treatment needed now, or should treatment be postponed until permanent teeth erupt or appropriate growth completed?
  • If treatment is indicated, what would it consist of?
  • How long will the treatment take?
  • How much will the treatment cost?
  • What are the payment options?
  • How often would I have to come in for an appointment?
  • How much would my insurance cover, and what will be the out-of-pocket portion?
  • Do any teeth need to be removed?

During this initial visit, we will give you answers to these questions as well as address any other specific questions you may have.

We know that your time is valuable, so to expedite your treatment, if you would like, we may also use the time during the initial appointment for the diagnostic records. Diagnostic records include X-rays, photos and impressions for study models and are necessary for developing the appropriate treatment plan. While we are often able to answer some of the general questions about treatment during the initial examination, we will address specific areas after careful analysis of the diagnostic records. Each patient's needs are unique; thus, a personalized treatment plan will be presented to you during your next appointment.

Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your first visit:

  • If your child has a recent panoramic X-ray (taken within the past 6 months), you may ask your dentist to provide us with the copy.
  • If you have orthodontic insurance coverage, please bring your insurance card to your first visit so we may be able to give you an estimate of your cost.
