It is never too late for orthodontic treatment, and braces are not just for kids. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, malocclusion (crooked teeth and misaligned jaws) leads to a variety of problems aside from being unaesthetic. Crowded teeth are more difficult to keep clean and, as a result of inadequate oral hygiene, are more prone to tooth decay and/or gum disease. Protrusiveness of upper incisors makes them more susceptible to trauma and fractures. Deep bites contribute to excessive wear of lower teeth due to excessive forces being applied to them. Open bites prevent patients from correct swallowing, impede their talking ability and make biting into a sandwich difficult, if not impossible, in some severe cases. Crossbites contribute to uneven facial esthetics and unfavorably influence growth. Many patients with crossbites also encounter temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) and experience joint pain.

So it is not only for good looks that straight teeth are better for you! Harmonious occlusion and straight teeth function better and create a healthier you.

Consequently, it is never too late to improve the health of your mouth, teeth and your gums. A straight and beautiful smile also improves your personal appearance and boosts your self-esteem, not to mention it is what people first notice about you!

The advancements in orthodontic treatment over the years have made orthodontic treatment a lot more comfortable, esthetic and efficient. In addition to traditional metal braces, many alternatives exist today. The clear braces are very esthetically pleasing and hardly noticeable. If traditional braces are not for you, clear aligners (Invisalign) are also available in some cases. Please visit your orthodontist today to find out more.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a series of invisible aligners (mouth trays) used in a specific sequence to straighten teeth. In other words, they are an invisible way to straighten teeth. The aligners are translucent and removable. They are specifically fabricated to custom fit your mouth and progress in series to produce desired tooth movement. As specified by your doctor, you will wear the given set of aligners for a period of time (usually 2 or 3 weeks per aligner set) and, after the given time, move on to the new set of aligners. The doctor might give you 2-3 sets of aligners at the time.

Please follow the specific instructions given by your doctor closely, since inconsistent wear of aligners will negatively affect your treatment. In some cases, if the patients do not follow the specific instructions, treatment might have to stop and be revised, resulting in additional charges.

As you might have seen on the television commercials, the aligners are designed to invisibly straighten teeth without anyone knowing and not affecting your appearance and making you self-conscious about your mouth. You can also eat and drink what you are used to. However, in order to make the whole process a complete success, a patient’s great cooperation is essential.
